'The divided Body' vertelt verhalen over het lichaam, verschuift
betekenissen en snijdt diep tot aan de grens waar leven en dood elkaar raken.
De architectuur van de Predikherenkerk laat eigenlijk
lezen als een samengesteld lichaam. Naast het schip en de sacristie wordt ook
het dormitorium aangewend om het werk van gerenommeerde kunstenaars en jong
talent een plaats te geven. De kerk blinkt uit in zijn monumentaliteit en is
bijzonder in zijn historiek: het is de hertogelijke grafkerk van Graaf Hendrik
III en zijn echtgenote Aleidis van Bourgondië.
'The Divided Body' tells stories
about the body, expands definitions and strikes at the heart of the crossroad
between life and death. The architecture of the Dominican Church in Leuven can
actually be interpreted as an assembled body. In addition to the nave and the
sacristy, the dormitory is also being used to exhibit artworks by renowned
artists and young talents. The church excels in its monumentality and it has a
fascinating history: it is the ducal sepulchre of Duke Henry III and his wife
Aleidis of Burgundy.

Zwevend tussen verleden en toekomst,
zoekt de citadel haar nieuwe bestemmingen op en vraagt om geïntegreerd te worden
in het centrum van Diest. Kunstenaars reflecteren op het verleden en onderzoeken
de toekomstmogelijkheden van deze grote site. Twintig professionele kunstenaars
laten zich inspireren door de site en creëren nieuw werk telkens voor een
specifiek plekje van de citadel. Daarnaast komen kunstwerken uit de collectie
van het M HKA – het museum voor hedendaagse kunst Antwerpen – op visite om de
dialoog aan te gaan met deze militaire parel.
Suspended between past and future,
the citadel seeks out her new destinations and asks to be integrated in the
center of Diest. Artists reflect on the past and explore the future
possibilities of this great site. Twenty professional artists are inspired by
the site and create new work each time for a specific spot of the citadel. In
addition, works from the collection of the M HKA - Museum of Contemporary Art
Antwerp – are in dialogue with this military glory.

In deze tentoonstelling treden vijf kunstenaars voor het
voetlicht. Het kunsttechnische label grisaille herinnert vooral aan het
schilderen in grijstinten. In de middeleeuwen werden grisailles op de zijluiken
van altaarstukken geschilderd om beeldhouwwerk te suggereren. Ook later in
adellijke optrekjes zien we grisailles, al dan niet met een trompe-l’oeil bedoeling, verschijnen in de
statige traphal. De associatie met rouw en dood is niet noodzakelijk (cf. de
dodendans bij Holbein), maar in elk geval dient de grisaille eerder een
apollinisch dan wel een dionysisch ideaal.
In this
exhibition five artists are highlighted.
The art technical label grisaille remembers mainly to painting in shades of
gray. In the Middle Ages grisailles were painted on the outside of the wings of
triptychs to suggest sculptures. Also later in noble residences we see
grisailles, whether or not aiming for atrompe-l'oeil, appear in the majestic staircase. The association
with mourning and death is not required (see the dance of death by Holbein), but
in any case, the grisaille serve as an
Apollonian rather than Dionysian ideal.

Het
Oostendse Kunstencentrum Vrijstaat O. slaat de handen in elkaar met
Provinciedomein Raversyde voor de nieuwe groepstentoonstelling Private Shelter.
Een uitgekiend circuit van sculpturen, installaties, schilderkunst, video,
nieuwe media, sound art en fotografie op dit duinendomein moet een indringend
beeld oproepen van het individu in deze vervreemdende omgeving. Ooit stond hier
de soldaat in confrontatie met de vijand. Nu staat de bezoeker tegenover het
kunstwerk in datzelfde betonnen karkas dat bescherming én gevaar
uitstraalt.
The
Ostend Arts Centre Vrijstaat O. worked together with Provinciedomein Raversyde
for the new group exposition Private Shelter. A sophisticated circuit of
sculptures, installations, painting, video, new media, sound art and photography
on this dune field must generate a penetrating picture of the individual in this
alienating environment. Formerly a soldier stood in confrontation with the
enemy. Now the visitor faces the art work in the same concrete carcass that
radiates protection and danger.
